No Music
I’m not a musician. Not by trade or by practice. And I’m fully aware of just how difficult it can be to make good music, especially for a game. Trying to make music that’s exciting, evokes the right feelings, and isn’t annoying is tough and, clearly, is a job in and of itself. By making a video game by myself, I’m already the designer, coder, artist, sound designer, marketer… Why add musician to the list?
So my plan is to not make any music, at least not for my first game. If there’s no music in the game, then what? Is it just weird silence broken only by the silly sound effects of bumping into objects and picking up coins?
Nope! I decided to try something a little weird and novel; I made a playlist on a music streaming service and will be encouraging players to listen to it while playing. It’s actually composed of stuff I’ve been listening to while making the game, which I think adds a little “I don’t know what.” My hope is that I’ll be able to give musicians more recognition and value for their work, share some kick*ss tunes with the world, and (obviously) reduce my workload.
Check it out below, let me know what you think. The feeling I’m going for is a bumpin’ arcade, neon lights, synthwave, cyberpunk, and a ton of bass!
